Trollheimen - Home of the Trolls
Trollheimen is a mountain range on the border between Nordmøre in Møre og Romsdal and Sør-Trøndelag. In the west, the mountains is of alpine character, while in the east the landscape is quieter. The area is bordered by Surnadal and Rindal in the north, Orkdal and Dovre Railway in the east, Sunndal in the south and fjords in the west.
Alpine peaks and sheltered valleys with traditional cottages form a nice frame for hiking in summer and winter in Trollheimen, an area that also is called "the gem among Norwegian mountain regions". The variety and contrasts characterize the nature of Trollheimen and has inspired a growing number of hikers in well over a hundred years.
The area includes both the magnificent Innerdalen valley to the west with the top "Trolla" of 1800 m. and "Trollhetta" at 1616 m. in the east. The landscape in the east is characterized by quiet and relatively smooth lines, but as we come westward it becomes increasingly wilder, more alpine and monumental.
Those who enjoy the height, will find Trollheimen very interesting. The trip to "Snota" are of the finest summit hiking trips that can be walked. "Innerdalstårnet" has been called Norway's Matterhorn, but the top can be reached without climbing. Since the main valleys located at 500-700 meters, many of the routes that go over the mountains between the valleys, have rather large height differences. Mostly the terrain is easy to hike in. If you are interested in flowers, you hardly find an area with a more interesting mountain flora.
